Reading skills are essential in today's world and for the future of my students. My students are often interested in a variety of things, and I believe this novel will really bring them all together to help build a strong class community. They can see themselves reflected in the main character and the struggles that are portrayed throughout his story. We need a class set of the novel "Wonder" by RJ Palacio to explore what it means to be empathetic and respectful of others' differences. As a culture, we can use literature to help us reflect on our own lives. It is important to me that my students not only understand the literary concepts of this novel - from characterization to plot details to the different themes that are presented - but it's also critical for me to help students evaluate multiple perspectives. When they begin to see beyond the scope of their communities and themselves, they start to understand the tribulations of others who are different than them.
