My goal in my classroom is to create a small sensory area that provides space where students with academic or behavioral challenges can refocus and calm down. I would like to provide a small area in the room with a rug where students can go relax, sit if they are upset, or complete work. I also would like to have stand up bins that contain various sensory products that students can use. Already students have started to utilize the bean bag either as an reward, a place to calm down, or a place to complete work. By having a sensory area and sensory related items such as a rug, stand up sensory bins and special chairs in the classroom, is known to help increase attention, lower aggressive behaviors, increase creativity and provide a sense of calm and security. I believe by providing an area in my room it will improve students overall learning and success in school.
