I chose to ask for iPads because I've seen firsthand what the available apps can do to help students with obstacles in written expression access the curriculum as seamlessly as their peers.
Regular education students are sometimes overlooked as potentially needing technology to support their participation in the curriculum. More and more frequently, students that do not benefit from the additional funding and/or personnel that a special education environment would provide are in need of assistive technology to realize their full potential. I have witnessed the power of something as simple as a screenshot with built-in text box capability transform a student's ability to take notes with the rest of the class in a neatly organized way that was previously impossible without a scribe. This is technology that is otherwise unavailable with the laptops that are provided for general education use.
With the purchase of this iPad set, I can utilize the apps that I've piloted and been successful with in a larger scale that reaches more students. Having only one in my classroom has been frustratingly motivating!
