Throughout the school year, I assign various classroom projects that peak student interest and creativity. When students think of English class they often think of the traditional boring essays; although, I am very much about teaching students to write a well-written essay, I realize that not all students express themselves exclusively by writing in a formal manner (who does?). In conjunction with our more formal writing, I include assignments where students are able to express their feelings about a piece of literature, a video, or a current event. These projects are oftentimes springboards into a more formal writing--a way to get the kids thinking. Art has a way of allowing expression that cannot be done in writing. In these trying times, students have many different feelings that need to be expressed. Writing them down is difficult. The projects that I have in my class lend themselves well to helping students work on feelings and vent frustration. As mental health is a focus and concern of my department, I feel that this expression is much needed.
