Visual Art teachers have been challenged with how to safely teach students as we merge from distance-learning to in-person learning. My first thought was a sense of the loss of our Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB) class format, art studio space and access to materials. Just two years ago we completely reinvented our art program and it was wildly successful. Each and every student had the opportunity to be engaged through choice. Student interest and accountability was at its peak. I asked myself, how can my art students maintain ownership over their work when so much is unknown? How can I help facilitate learning when students have a variety of experiences, interests, and materials? Visual Journaling! Visual art journaling in sketchbooks will allow students to flexibly learn at home and at school. When in the classroom less paperwork will exchange hands and when at home their journals will be portable and carried along with their school-issued electronic device. Students will combine elements of writing, drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, etc. with materials available to them wherever they are learning.
