My students always tell me that they cannot read. That is not the truth. In fact, it's the opposite--they CAN, but after years of being told what to leave, the LOVE of reading is lost and instead, reading becomes a chore. This is something that has been done TO them because of high stakes testing and the demand of higher powers on teachers and their students. We have to go back to what spoke to the students, what MOVED them into becoming readers--books that relate to them. My students come from harsh lives, but the books we often ask them to read do not relate to them. I want to put books in the classroom that they WANT to dive into, that they want to eat up, that encourage them to take the next level. Finally, I want my students to say, "Yes, I can read, and I LOVE it." The first place to start, then, is in the classroom--where students can browse books with people who look just like them on the front cover. Please help me support my students and build my library. With help from donors, I will be able to begin reaching my students and their need to see themselves in the literature they read. I hope--no, I BELIEVE--that connecting them to books will be the first step in creating life long readers.
