Our DHH team strongly believes that one of the most important predictors of a successful reader is directly linked to the amount of time they spend with books. Students must not only practice literacy skills at school, but also need to have positive interactions with books at home. Students often do not have access to reading materials in the home, and our our mission is to begin building a small library in the home of each of our students. English is not the primary or home language in many cases, so we have chosen books that will support picture literacy in any language. We believe that in order to build successful readers and writers, students must be given early positive literacy experiences. During our monthly events, we will be coaching parents to better support conversational book experiences in the home. First, teachers provide a model of what "reading aloud" can look like. Then, parents are given a safe environment in which to practice with the support of our DHH teachers. Finally, parents take home their new book and are encouraged to read it again and again with their child.
