I'm sure we all remember songs sung to us by our mothers, nursery rhymes, ABCs, and other songs learned years ago. Children are born musical beings with musical brains and therefore learn extensively through music. The brain uses the patterns in music to encode information and store it very successfully. My project aims to bring Ukuleles and shakers into my classroom of English language learners in order to teach language and promote oral fluency through music. Children get excited about music and they desire to sing and move along with the rhythm of music. I will use these instruments to bring joy into the language learning in my class and teach songs that students can be excited to sing and play along with. We will use intentional songs that incorporate current learning (parts of speech, specific vowel sounds, digraphs and diphthongs, synonyms, antonyms, etc.) and in turn learn the English language while also promoting music education and the arts.
