My class of Grade 5 Learners are learning from home and have limited access to instructional level and grade level books (ebooks have long waiting lines too). My students are interested in shared reading experiences in which they have the books in their hands and can "Post-it" their connections, questions, and important parts. Both The Watsons Go to Birmingham and Wonder are books that are grade level and teach tolerance and empathy. The Watsons has funny, interesting characters who learn about the violence preceding the Civil Rights Act; we will be learning about the Civil Rights Era later this year. Reading The Watsons as a shared reading experience will give the students background knowledge of the people and period of the Civil Rights Era in America. Wonder is a book with interesting, believable characters that helps teach tolerance and empathy.
