Independent reading and classroom read alouds are a great place for students to read books where they see themselves or people that are like them and have succeeded in the world. My students have built up a great amount of stamina, but as we near the end of the year they are no able to check out books form our school library due to inventory. I want to make sure they can continue to checkout the newest titles available. This project will also jumpstart our Mock Newbery group with mirrors and windows books. I share Rudine Sims Bishop's belief that "children have a right to books that reflect their own images and books that open less familiar worlds to them." Having these books will enhance the reading environment already included in the classroom. Having an automated checkout system will help track the vast array of books as well.
