My 3rd grade students reside in a large metro city just north of Atlanta, Ga. We are a mixed socio--economic school. Currently, 32% of students receive free and reduced lunch. A number of our students live in government or transitional housing and never know where they might spend the night or when they might eat next. Most cannot afford the school supplies that we require at the beginning of the year. Asking these families to provide even more materials as we unveil the new Common Core Standards curriculum is difficult and a challenge for teachers at my school, especially me. My class is a high energy class. They love to be hands on and are always on the go. They enjoy being leaders in their own learning through the use of our interactive board, computers, and hands-on approach to skills. Most of my students read above grade level and are always striving to learn more and receive new knowledge through the lessons I teach.
