We live in a technological world. I recently learned about Digital Layering. Most everyone, I assume, has taken a selfie. Students will learn important photographic skills and visual language. Do students always want to center their faces? What other compositional strategies are engaging? We will play with our facial expressions and composition until each student is happy with their selfie. Utilizing the Art Set app on the iPad Pro, students will recreate their selfie using layers. For our first layer, we will use only the tools that allowed our photograph to say with us. The emphasis is on color. Students can mix colors and paint their face. if they do not like what they did, they can simply press undo. Next, we will explore value by really looking to capture tonal changes in highlights and shadows. For example, students can exaggerate their facial features by changing their normal eye shape to that of a cat eye. As we continue, students will exaggerate their features or transform them with layers. A once human looking face can be transformed into an animal or alien face. The students' imagination will drive the creative process. Working over a selfie photograph, gives students an opportunity to really ‘learn to look’. Tracing over parts of the face is a highly engaging way to spend time purposefully exploring shape, form, etc. This kind of task also presents a valuable starting point for some of the less creatively confident learners – they are off and racing, rather than worrying about their first marks on a blank page.
