My students are in a constant state of movement and collaboration, which requires them to move in ways that break the boundaries of the "traditional" classroom layout. Everyday, we engage in literature circles and math centers, and my fourth graders hardly stay put in their chairs. I also have a class full of wiggly nine and ten-year-olds, and I'm determined to try flexible seating to meet their needs for movement and choice. I would love to begin by introducing Hokki stools to them, especially for students who struggle to sit still, and at my small group instruction table. I have borrowed a Hokki stool from our school's OT and was amazed at how a few of my learners were able to concentrate on their work while using it. They are so much easier for students to move around the classroom than chairs, and they provide the stimulation that so many of my growing learners crave.
