Reading the books, Flipped and Wonder, as a class will help students feel a part of the classroom community as well as give them a common language for discussing important topics like the importance of character, empathy and kindness. Close reading skills, which are important for college readiness, are enhanced when students have the text in-hand while they are reading as a class. Additionally, it is easier to cite appropriate text evidence while discussing the important issues raised in each of these texts. Having these books donated instead of requiring students to buy them helps bridge the gaps for those students whose families cannot afford the extra expense. Students love the characters of August, Via, Jack Will, Juli, and Bryce and love entering the world of the text. Through the lives of these characters, they learn the importance of caring for others and making sure that they are making choices of which they can be proud.
