Students learn best when they are involved in the process, comfortable in their environments, motivated by their learning space and content, and supported by those around them. In a true learner centered environment, students know each other's strengths and weaknesses, see each other as resources, and utilize each other’s skills. To develop deep self-awareness and metacognitive habits, we need to remove all the roadblocks of the traditional classroom model. By adding dry erase covers to our classroom tables, students can demonstrate their learning across content areas and share their thinking with others. This is an easy way for students to collaborate communicate with one another, and build their problem solving and critical thinking skills. Flexible seating, such as floor seats and wobble cushions, and mini whiteboards invite students to move around the learning space and choose spots that work best for their learning style. Offering choice helps to engage learners and develops independence. These materials will support my desire to create a nurturing environment where students feel loved, and encouraged, and where students are at the center of their learning experiences.
