My school is located in an urban area and more than 65% of my student population is on Free and reduced lunch. More than 60% of our students are Hispanic. My school has worked hard to challenge our students and narrow the achievement gap that often exists with our Hispanic and black students. While many schools are able to ask students to purchase their own reflection/sketch journals, so many of my students do not have the funds to do so themselves. My students are bright, hardworking individuals who repeatedly rise above their personal challenges and aspire to successfully graduate with the skills necessary to go on to a four year college. While many of my students have overcome economic and personal hardship, they have not allowed those challenges to stop them from dreaming of a better life. Many of my students first generation Americans who are the first in their family to graduate as well as the first to go on to college.
