My co-teacher and I work in an urban area, and our students are not often exposed to different types of communities. Our third unit of the year revolves around deforestation, the Amazon Rainforest, and Peru. However, many students often have a hard time fully understanding the parts of the world we discuss because they rarely leave their urban setting. Giving our students access to these 2 books will allow them to put their new knowledge of deforestation, the Amazon, and Peru into context. It is our hope that they will be able to gain a deeper understanding of the people and animals that live in the Amazon and are affected by deforestation if they read books in which the characters are directly affected by it.
