Our school is located in the heart of Illinois. 88% of my students are low income. These students are eligible to receive free or reduced-price lunches, live in substitute care, or whose families receive public aid. The state of Illinois average for low-income students is 52%. Many students do not have clothing, school supplies, or books at home. Despite the fact that the poverty level is high, many of my students are very bright and have amazing potential. Most families are hardworking but cannot afford to buy new books, and they expect the school to be able to provide literature at their child’s level. Unfortunately, the school cannot afford to fund new books either. Many of these talented students are reading the same books several times and they are bored.
