In the last few years, the state of Florida has done away with self-contained classes for ESE students. They have integrated them with mainstream students in efforts to provide ESE students with a quality education in the least restrictive environment. My job, as an ESE inclusion teacher, is to split my time between two classes and make sure those students are meeting their IEP needs. Our teachers do their best, but my students are not like everyone else, their special in the best of ways. Some are non-verbal, some have emotional issues, some are bursting with energy and literally can't sit still, where as others process information differently and require more time to grasp the concept. All of these children, be it in first grade or third, have one thing in common: they can't sit still for more than 15 minutes at a time. Be it from frustration, to excitement, to restlessness they have to move. Really, they have to. It breaks my heart when they get in trouble for wondering the classroom or bouncing in their seats or tapping on their desks. Our education system is designed to sit, listen, learn and write. That's great, but my kids need more. I'm hoping that providing students with alternate seating options they will find a positive way to release all that energy. I'm looking for bouncy bands for both chairs and desks because children may have a preference, and really I don't know which one would be best for their needs. Ball chairs and wobble stools and disks will allow wiggle movement, hopefully supporting my positive energy release model. These kids, they are amazing but they have so many more obstacles than their classmates. I just want to give them everything they need to be successful.
