This year, my English learners will be embarking on the adventure of online learning. With this new schedule, we will only have synchronous class time twice per week, so I plan to use that time to run small groups where students can practice the skills they have learned and ask questions. For this reason, I need to create engaging video lessons with visual support and clear explanations to teach new math concepts. Individualized instruction and personalized feedback given using the iPad and Apple pencil will help me to differentiate for students effectively. I will create videos in which I can show students my math work step by step as I explain. With these videos created, I will incorporate other technology tools to make the videos interactive in order to teach and practice problems with students step-by-step with immediate checks for understanding. I will then prepare additional videos (using the iPad and Apple pencil) to provide individualized feedback for students as well as provide targeted instruction for individuals and small groups in our virtual sessions. Additionally, the iPad will become a second screen during virtual class sessions and will provide added functionality and classroom management as I present my screen, play engaging instructional games, and more. All of this individualized instruction and personalized feedback allowed by using the iPad and Apple pencil will lead to greater student success and flexibility for students to work at their own pace. I also plan to fulfill my dream of switching to standards based grading since I will have created a library of instructional videos that can be used to teach and reteach concepts as needed. Standards based grading will also provide a clear way to teach student agency to my English learners.
