The materials listed for math, language arts, social studies, and general classroom supplies will assist students in making meaningful connections to the content. I use manipulatives and hands-on materials as regular components of our daily instruction to foster increased student learning overall. For example, the use of the math manipulative tiles will allow me to teach powerful visuals on area and perimeter. The paired fiction and non-fiction passages can help readers make sense of both texts, observing how they work together. As a teacher, I believe that putting the content in the hands of the students (this time quite literally!) is one of the most powerful teaching tools. Our class also includes a special education inclusion cluster, making it even more important to provide hands-on experiences to meet various needs. Regardless of academic skill level, all students' learning can be enhanced by being able to become part of their learning. When I moved into my new classroom, I discovered that the all the materials and manipulatives had personally belonged to the teacher before me - meaning I was exploring completely empty cabinets! The fulfillment of this project will allow for all students in our classroom to have access to manipulatives and hands-on materials that will further their learning and scaffold understanding to the next level.
