This project originally began with one of my favorite former teachers. She has since retired, and I am now teaching in her position! I have great memories of learning about the life cycle of a chicken, and I want to continue this tradition with my 6th grade class in our small town.
Many children have never witnessed the development and growth of an animal. They also have no idea where their food comes from. My goal is to give them hands-on experience with the life cycle of a chicken from its beginning. We will learn about the scientific process, life cycles, and embryological development. This project will address the North Dakota Science Standard for MS-LS4-3: "Analyze displays of pictorial data to compare patterns of similarities and differences in the embryological development across multiple species to identify relationships not evident in the fully formed anatomy".
I have chickens and a rooster on my ranch. I was raised on farm, and I know how to raise and care for young chicks. I have everything I need except the incubator. After our chicks have hatched, I will either keep them myself or give them away to local farms for egg production. I also have printed materials and books already to help me with teaching about this topic.
