I teach middle school students in Maple Hts, Ohio which is a first-ring suburb of Cleveland. 100% of my students receive free breakfast and lunch and the majority are minorities and from single-parent households or in foster care. I teach a remedial reading course for the most reluctant readers in the school. Many of them are easily distracted while reading due to a lack of interest and diagnosed attention deficits. By providing them with an inviting, comfortable space to choose a book on their own level and that interests them and then sit on a comfy chair or lay propped on a pillow, and read without the typical confines of a traditional classroom, I hope to help develop a love for reading in these students! By allowing them to be comfortable and spread out throughout the room and not have to sit right next to or across from someone can limit the distractions and help them focus on the task at hand.
