I teach an urban school where 95% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. These students come to us with little opportunity at home for flexibility, independence, and focus. I believe that those 3 skills can all be learned and I plan on helping my students learn all three. I have decided to incorporate alternative seating into my classroom to help the students stay focused and engaged. The children can choose between exercise balls, floor cushions, standing, crate seats, wobble seats, or a bean bag. Giving them the options will help them learn which type of seating works best for their learning. It will allow for some movement as they are not siting in a chair and it will encourage independence as they choose where they will sit. I believe this type of seating will not only help with movement, but it will decrease behavior problems by allowing them freedom in where they sit.
