As a fifth grade teacher, I place a lot of emphasis on social and community learning, and on the engineering process. That is, I encourage my students to make mistakes and to learn from those mistakes together. These supplies would allow the students in my room to utilize their resources in group problem solving scenarios, give them a chance to get up and interact with one another, and allow them to be more hands-on and in control of their learning. In groups they could work on the chart paper to jot down ideas and rough estimates. An additional whiteboard would allow each group their own wall space and presenting ability, allowing additional sharing and development of ideas. The mailbox organizers would allow easier communication between students as well as with myself, the teacher. Lastly, the benches would give growing bodies flexible and communal seating choices. My goal through this project is to encourage community, social communication skills, and real-life problem based learning.
