As a special education teacher I often see children who are struggling.
Children struggle emotionally, academically, and behaviorally. I have long strived to meet these children's needs as their environmental challenges continue to increase. How can we help children feel safe, loved, and calm while they are at school? Well, meet Basil!
Basil is a 2 year old black lab and certified therapy dog that will be working with our students in their classrooms each day. Basil and I will soon be attending a week-long training to get ready to begin supporting our students. Basil has been in training for 2 years through the Indiana Canine Assistance Network (ICAN) foundation to become a therapy dog. He was chosen for Rosa Parks Elementary because of his gentle personality with children. In October, Basil visited Rosa Parks and was fantastic with all the children’s’ excitement!
My goal is that Basil is a calming presence for our students and can help with emotional and social skills. There are numerous studies that show that having a therapy dog in a school setting can benefit students. I would like to purchase items for Basil so that he can be an asset to our students. Studies have shown that simply having students brush an animal alleviates anxiety and meets sensory needs that so many of our students are craving.
