Too often students look at history and at the world as black and white concepts. I want to help them explore the gray-- specifically, to examine the complexities of literature and film representations of the Holocaust. Currently, our school in rural Kentucky does not have a course dedicated to the lessons to be learned about trauma, about the consequences of violence and hatred (important lessons, especially today), about memory, and about hope. I have proposed such a class and have found out that I will be teaching the course beginning in the 2018-2019 school year. However, in a school that is desperately in need of funding with no budgetary money to spare on resources for this new elective, I need help purchasing the books and films we will explore over the course of our study. I want my students to understand the variety of perspectives and the complexities as well as their own place in ensuring remembrance of the Holocaust. Specifically, we will look at the Holocaust from the perspective of children in I Never Saw Another Butterfly. We will explore the complexity of everyday citizens becoming complicit with the Nazi regime by looking at the book Neighbors. We will examine moral complexities with the movie The Gray Zone. Equally important, we will look at the power of forgiveness in the documentary Forgiving Dr. Mengele and at how students are taking ownership of ensuring we remember the past with the documentary Paper Clips.
