These books will help enrich a classroom environment that emphasizes the importance of reading. Though our school can not afford a campus library it is imperative that students have access to books. I am working on building a classroom environment that emphasizes the importance of reading not only for academic growth but for pleasure. All of the novels I have chosen were specifically created for language learners and were designed to be comprehensible for novice and intermediate learners (making reading more pleasurable).
Research shows that the most effective way for students to acquire language is through listening and reading in the Target Language. Educational researcher and linguist Dr. Stephen Krashen states that Free Voluntary Reading may be the most powerful tool in language education. I want to help nurture a love of reading and learning in all of my students by providing them with level appropriate materials. Reading a class novel is a part of my curriculum that students ask for more of. Students have even stated that the novels we read in class build their confidence in reading and gives them pride in themselves for being able to do so.
