Teaching tolerance in today's world is incredibly important. Using literature from past events helps students see how history has shaped our current world, but it does not show how society continues to make mistakes. The best way to learn about the world, without experiencing it, is through literature. In a Social Issues class, this is especially important. Many students do not experience injustice and therefore struggle to understand it exists. Reading about it helps them begin to comprehend the difficulties some of their peers encounter daily. These books will promote positive discussions and the analysis of authors presentation of sensitive topics. These two books, All American Boys and Symptoms of Being Human, tackle recent social issues in today's world. Because the world is constantly changing, so are the issues present in society. To benefit the class we need to update our readings.
