I am a first year teacher and I have been blessed with the most wonderful class at the very best elementary school. I started in 1st grade after the beginning of the school year and with a completely empty classroom. Every single thing that I have in my classroom for my students has been purchased with my own money. I have not had the luxury of being able to provide any type of manipulatives or mathematical supplies. My students have had to be flexible and they have worked so hard this year! I have 19 students in my class, and they are all so smart and so eager to learn. It has been a daily challenge for us to find, create, or borrow math manipulatives. My students and I have often had to create counters, dice, pattern blocks, and other supplies out of paper so that we can engage with the lessons and material.
