My students live in a low income area and do not have a lot of access to books outside of school or really in our school either. Our school does not have a library besides a little lending library by the front door of the school. This library is limited and even though my current library has a decently diverse group of books it needs more. As the “10 Easy Ways to Promote Your Classroom Library” article suggests, I want to make my library space comfortable. It suggests creating an area “that accommodates 4-6 students at a time” by using “beanbags, comfy chairs, or cubes so that students can choose a comfy place to read” (Learning Unlimited).
Right now, I have one small bookshelf and just two back pillows for my students but I would like to change that to add more comfortable space for my students to read, both independently as well as with friends. The benefit of the bookshelf couch would be the 5 shelves that are built into it. This way it not only creates comfortable seating for 2 students but it also provides more book storage! I love the idea of this and cannot believe I did not find something like this sooner!
The books I want to add are to help my students see themselves in literature. Most of my students are Arabic and I do not have any books that represent them and their culture. The book bins are to help organize my library by genre and topics. I am hoping that with the bookshelf couch, back pillows, new/updated books, and the organization my students will become even more engaged and excited about reading!
