Our students are in 10th and 11th grade. They chose to become part of an environmental science program and to connect to their watershed via water, soil, and air quality analysis as well as macro invertebrate sampling, riparian restoration and field-based research. They manage a flock of chickens and help with all the maintenance needs around our ponds, creek, and farm facility. Our school has a 65% poverty rate and most of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. They do not have a connection to sustainable or fresh food, which makes our project so powerful. Our students chose to be part of the Arts and Sciences academy, often seem as the alternative or drama school. They are artists, musicians, scientists and and so much more. They often enter our school with low test scores and grade point averages, yet our school tests higher than 95% of the local high schools and is a US News Bronze school because of the amazing work our students accomplish. They are willing to work!
