The demands on today's students are much different than those of past generations. Students today are tasked with learning 21st Century skills to become more competitive in the world. As a building block for learning these skills, students need to be given some choice in their learning environment. One step to giving students choice is to move from traditional seating, where students are lined up in rows of desks working almost exclusively in an independent setting, to flexible seating.
Flexible seating not only gives students choice about where they sit, but also gives them ownership in their learning. Students are encouraged to find their optimal working environment from a variety of options throughout the classroom. Students who struggle to sit still can benefit from standing stations, Gaiam Balance Ball Chairs, and stability wobble seat cushions. While other students may benefit from working in a more traditional desk and chair. Providing students movement, while not distracting other students who need a more structured work space, makes for a win-win environment.
