The materials in this project would allow my students to concentrate more effectively on their schoolwork while also feeling more empowered to make good choices. Many of the students who spend time in behavior classrooms have disorders like ADHD, sensory processing disorder, ODD, autism, or reactive attachment disorder. Each of these diagnoses come with their own can of worms, but all of them benefit from having sensory input throughout the day. Not only does positive sensory input give them something tangible to focus on (that isn't their anger/anxiety), but it also counteracts the overstimulation they often feel, simply by being in a school building. I've requested three items to hep my students with this issue, which are a weighted stuffed animal, some kinetic sand, and a container of play-foam. I've also requested two books that are specifically geared toward children who haven't yet learned to manage their emotions in safe ways. The books that we read to our children tell them about the world they live in, and I want to tell my students that they are powerful, worthy, and forgiven. These books will help tremendously with that. The last two items I requested are a set of punch cards and a portable desk. The punch cards will be used as fun incentives for making good choices. Once the kids fill up their cards, they get to choose a reward from the treasure chest! The portable desk will be used as an alternative seating option for students to work at when they need space from their peers. It's common for us to have one student in an active behavioral episode while the other students try to stay on task. This desk would allow them to have an extra place to sit during these times. Thank you so much!
