STEM opportunities, like an engineering LEGO wall, provide opportunities for students to develop 21st-Century skills through hands-on, inquiry-based experimentation and discovery. Having a LEGO wall in the Media Center will give students the opportunity to connect engineering with literacy. For example, we might read a story and then students may participate in a LEGO building challenge which is an extension of the story we just read. Literacy-based STEM activities like this are especially important for schools, like mine, which serve special education, ESL, Title 1 and general education students. These hands-on activities provide differentiation and allow ALL students to interact with literature in a more memorable and meaningful way. Providing a visual, interactive extension activity of a story engages students who may not have otherwise understood the story due to a language or learning barrier.
