Many students who do not experience success in other areas experience success in my classes. These students enjoy classes that teach hands on life long skills such as the ones taught in the Family and Consumer Science area. (FACS) Many of our students are low income, reduced lunch recipients. The school is a rural school district in Wisconsin. My students enjoy working on employability skills such as alterations and tailoring. They are considering careers in Fashion or Interior Design. This is a new class with no budget. The FACS department budget has been cut 10% for each of 7 years. This equals a 70% cut and prices have only increased. The students have supplied small sewing items such as needles and thread. We are working on sewing our own pin cushions and hot pads from donated clothes that still have some "wear" left in the fabric. School staff and community members are donating fabric and stuffing.
