I have been an Occupational Therapy Assistant for twenty-four years and I love my job! I am requesting fidget and sensory tools so I can make sensory boxes for my students so they can succeed and excel in the classroom. My students will be given these boxes to help address their specific sensory needs. Does your brain ever get hyper-focused on something (bills, upcoming surgery, ailing parents) preventing you from starting or finishing a task or tasks? That's how certain sensory issues affect the students with whom I work. It prevents my sweet and precious kiddos from focusing, exploring, creating, learning, starting, and finishing tasks. The requested tools will better assist the needs of my students in their goals based on their essential needs in the virtual and in person learning environment. Many of these tools are not provided by the school and/or home environment. Sensory tools can help students who receive occupational therapy in a number of ways. For example, a sand timer can act as a visual directive that enables a student to start and complete a five-minute assignment. Another example, two spritzes of sour candy or a few gummies can help students stop eating their pencils so they can copy three sentences from the board. Also, a glitter wand can help a student sit quietly on the carpet or in front of a computer during story time and actually focus on the story. Again, these are just a few examples of how these tools can enhance the students' academic learning achievement. These tools, though seemingly small, can go a long way in aiding these students in their success.
