My students are in the 2nd grade and most of them are seven years old. I teach language arts to 10 girls and 24 boys at an urban Tennessee school. Over 94% of our students qualify for free lunch. Most of my students do not have access to educational materials at home due to limited family resources. They have not experienced enriched learning environments at home and many of the students have not attended pre-K classes. I have several students that began 2nd grade below grade level in their reading and math skills. Our school faculty works hard to meet the needs of our students in a variety of ways. All of our classrooms have Smart Boards and 3 computers. Our students attend classes weekly in art, music, physical education, computer and library. We also have an outdoor classroom that integrates learning experiences in all of the content areas. Because my students have varied learning preferences I try to create learning experiences that will appeal to their learning style.
