As an avid reader myself, I enjoy reading books based in different places around the world, and books that have cultures that differ from my own. I believe that students would enjoy reading books that have diverse characters and cultures, where they can hear from authors from the Own Voices movement. Books like Cinder, The Hate You Give, and Wonder, will introduce my students to diverse characters, with differing abilities, that will give them the opportunity to see themselves in the characters in the novels. When students have access to stories that they can relate to, will create a love of reading, they might not have had before. I believe having books with diversity in them, will create a climate of acceptance in my classroom, which is something I strive for. If students have access to novels that have a diverse set of characters in them, it will help them open their minds to other ideas, outside of what they already think or believe.
