The project will consist of different types of seating for students. Students are not meant to sit still all day long for hours in the classroom. Students need to move and wiggle. Exercise balls, instead of chairs, will allow students to move while completing work and staying focused. Student achievement will improve in the classroom as well as attention and focus. Also, wobble stools will be added to the classroom during guided reading and math time allowing students to move and wiggle during this intensive reading and math time. Wobble cushions are especially effective for students with ADHD or ASD. Students will also have the option to sit in a normal chair if they want to choose that option. They may have their choice of seating at the tables or on the floor. In 2016, Steelcase Education funded a study, which showed that classrooms designed to support participative learning increased student engagement compared to traditional row-by-column seating (Scott-Webber, Strickland, and Kapitula). Of course, it makes sense that if a classroom is intentionally designed to support different modes of learning children are more apt to stay engaged – for example, individual study, group work, presentations, peer-to-peer discussion, and one-on-one instruction. (Psychology Today, 2019) Herman Miller also completed a study in 2008 that stated that “giving people some control over their surroundings adds to their sense of well-being.” This makes sense for students as well. If you give a child the choice of where they work then it gives student control which in turn students will become more and more accountable for their work. Flexible seating is a no brainer and a easy way to give student control of their learning.
