A set of Chromebooks will provide much needed access to technology in my classroom. Currently, students receive one hour in the computer lab a week working on keyboarding skills, internet safety, and learning games. Outside of the lab, students do not get to use computers while at school.
My students are digital natives, and I firmly believe that we need to embrace that as teachers and help students explore the ways technology can enrich their learning. One way my students will use the Chromebooks is as a technology center during reading and math rotations. Students will play educational games and explore applications that can help them master math facts and build reading fluency. Another way I intend to use the Chromebooks is as a research source for science and social studies units. For example, students can research a biome as part of a science unit of study. Finally, students will use the Chromebooks as a means to publish their writing and research through word processing programs, slide shows, and short movies.
