In a small rural high school in Oregon, students struggle with mental health crisises, addiction and rehabilitation, broken families, and transience and homelessness. A student's grasp of reading comprehension, critical thinking, and analytical writing are directly affected by this. Healthy relationships with peers and adults are needed to motivate and encourage students who cannot function in a traditional school environment. Most Juniors and Seniors need to pass the Oregon State Reading and Writing Assessments to graduate. Many of these students have grown accustomed to failing. Establishing a lifestyle of reading can help to overcome these challenges. The gap widens even more between proficient readers and developing readers at the high school level. My students will read more frequently when given choices of high interest reading materials.
