I teach an Alternative classroom of 12 students in grades K-2. I work with students who have been removed from the traditional classroom setting due to behavior. It is a challenge, needless to say. But it is one that I gladly accept! I do spend a lot of time dealing with anger, lack of motivation, arguments, and sometimes violent outburst and/or meltdowns! Many of them are already street smart, but their desire to learn does not always transfer to the classroom. I am constantly advocating funds for Alternative students since there isn't adequate money for the program. I do not want them to feel unwanted! Not only have they left their familiar environment, but they enter one that lacks resources found in the regular classroom. How are they supposed to feel? Think? I want to do what I can to provide them with a positive, literacy-rich classroom.
