The power of choice can be a motivational and thrilling opportunity. I would love to be able to give my students the power of choice when it comes to the seating options in my room. Being able to give my class the choice of where to sit (or stand) will greatly improve their concentration, mood, relationships and over all success in education.
Allowing my students to choose their seating will help the diverse learning needs of all individuals in my room. Currently our classroom set up is a traditional style with tables and standard chairs. My plan is to have several areas around the room that students can sit or stand at depending on their needs at that time. One table for standing, one for sitting on the floor, and four others with different stool or chair options.
There is a physical benefit and difference to each seating option. I know as an adult, it's hard to sit in one place for extended periods of time. Especially if those spots are uncomfortable. For how active kids are, this is even more true. Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning by choosing options that are best for them.
