All subject areas build on reading skills. When a student has difficulty reading, and understanding what they read, it can greatly impact their learning in other areas. The best way to get better at reading is to...READ! This project is important to me and all of my students because we need more high interest books in our classroom library. Many of our books are outdated or falling apart.
You can escape to many new and exciting places with a good book! When classrooms have a student centered library, with a variety of books on their reading level, success is greater. Many of my students love mysteries/ghost stories. Authors like Mary Downing Hahn and Peg Kehret keep them on the edge of their seats until they finish the book. Deep and Dark and Dangerous is one of the favorites to keep students engaged and reading. Other award worthy novels, like the Serafina series and Stepping on the Cracks take students into worlds that can exist only in many their imaginations. Books like Fuzzy Mud also teach many important life lessons like the effects of bullying. Not only can we expand our interests, but we can all become better readers and learners with a high quality, inviting classroom library.
