My student are of various experiences and backgrounds with the major coming from high poverty areas and families. Because of the high poverty rate, the illiteracy rate is high as well. With a high illiteracy rate, many feeder schools have a greater emphasis on reading and student come to middle school with little experience with science, performing experiments, and data collection.
