This project is based on the philosophy of "setting the stage to engage" and make learning engaging and fun for students to problem solve and learn concepts. We are setting the stage in Narnia to learn about and assess the students understanding of the 7 fantasy motifs in literature. We will be reading the book, "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" by C.S. Lewis, as a class and focusing on the characteristics and structure of the fantasy genre. The requested holiday and winter trees, lights, snowflakes, and snow cover blankets will be used to create the scenes in the book. Students will be emersed in the Narnia wintery snowy world and solve tasks relating to topics in the book that point out the 7 fantasy motifs. Learning should be fun and engaging and the items in this project will help to make Narnia come alive along with learning fantasy motifs along the way! We will start our adventure by going through the wardrobe and ending up in Narnia to discover the seven motifs in the fantasy genre. Each motif will have an activity that is based on the set up of the room. For example, within the scene ( the snowy forest) students will have some magical creatures to encounter and solve a task of finding magical creatures in a reading passage. Another motif is heroism, and in Narnia after coming through the wardrobe, students will define what heroism is and how it is shown in the Narnia story. The magic of the lampost will be evaluated by an activity describing how magical object helps a story to be engaging and has a purpose within the story. This will relate to the engaging scenery as they encounter each of these motifs as they travel with a map through Narnia and meet the characters and magic within.
