"Miss Nurmi, can my mom and me have some of the lettuce we grew in the classroom garden? My mom doesnt have a job and we need food." These are the exact words a girl in my first grade class asked me quietly one afternoon when students were coming in from recess. "Of course," I responded, and quickly found resources through the school to set her mom up access to a food bank. But this is just one moment representative of many in my classroom in which I knew I had to help meet not just the academic but social and emotional needs of students. I have a B.A. in Elementary Education from Wake Forest and a M.Ed. in Reading Education from U.V.A., but all the classes in the world cannot prepare you completely for the challenges of teaching. Possibly as importantly, having the physical resources to engage, motivate, and help students learn is a huge part of my job. I greatly appreciate any financial help.
