Who can tell me what an adverb is? A conjunction? How about a vivid verb? Learning parts of speech was always such a drag in school. It was hard, boring and just didn't make sense. Through mentor texts, students manipulate sentences to identify parts of speech, and then imitate the author in their own writing. Our week begins with a read aloud from one of these wonderful mentor texts. Then throughout the week we discover what it takes to make sentences really POP! These books are about different cultures, time periods, some are fiction, some are not. They will give my students a place to learn more about the world all during a grammar lesson.
