All students should be able to choose from a variety of chapter books in a highly effective classroom library. This project would include a rich variety of genres so the students are exposed to: realistic fiction, historical fiction, fantasy and science fiction, biography and autobiography, stories, classics, myths and legends, picture books, and more. Multiple copies should be available of popular series of books so multiple students can read them at the same time. Books that are of different reading levels should also be available to all. This creates a well rounded set of books to choose from. Students need to be able to learn to love to read so they will be effective readers. A love for reading comes from practice and the want to read. Who wants to read books that are not interesting to the individual reader? Not me! This is why an highly effective classroom library needs a large quantity of great books for third graders.
